About the event

Along with keys player-Mick Bishop and tasteful drummer Kieron Mew, the trio have rapidly become established on the South East Kent jazz scene hosting the regular Saturday evening Deal Jazz Club which attracts guest singers and soloists from all over the area. ‘Night Breeze’ was recorded during summer 2023 at Marler Audio in Dover, and the Album comprises well chosen songs and exceptional original compositions by Airth and Bishop, such as the gorgeous ballad ‘Song For Marni’ which is dedicated to Airth’s daughter and ‘Smart Alec’, a homage to the jazz musicians of the ‘60s that have influenced the trio’s classic jazz sound.

Among the covers is a gently grooving reading of the title track recorded by Ronnie Laws in the ‘70s, and a beautiful bossa nova arrangement of ‘The Lamp Is Low’ There’s also the Great American Songbook standard ‘You Stepped Out Of A Dream’ which had been previously recorded by two of Airth’s tenor saxophone heroes, Dexter Gordon and Eddie ‘Lockjaw’ Davis, and the haunting ‘Dîner avec Roland’ written by celebrated composer and guitarist William Lovelady, a Deal resident and a regular participant at Deal Jazz Club.

Graeme Airth was born in Scotland and subsequently to London where he became a member of the ‘80s chart-topping band Curiosity Killed The Cat, with hits including ‘Misfit’ and ‘Ordinary Day’. Following his allotted fifteen minutes of pop stardom he became a regular performer and DJ around the London clubs and music venues, establishing himself as a first call soloist for private events. Airth eventually took the plunge into playing jazz full time and joined the exodus from London, relocating to the idyllic St Margaret’s Bay on the South East Kent coast Airth continues to perform in London but spends more time playing closer to home at venues in Whitstable, Margate, Faversham, Canterbury, Dover, Folkestone and Deal.
